A big thank-you to my dear friend Elaine who passed this link on to me.
Yann Martel, author of "Life of Pi", has taken it upon himself to provide Prime Minister Stephen Harper with a reading list that will inspire stillness. Every two weeks on his website, "What is Stephen Harper Reading?", Mr. Martel posts the title of a book that he has mailed to the Prime Minister. Each post comes with an explanation of why he chose the book, and how it contributes to the pursuit of stillness. And who among us (Prime Ministers included) isn't in need of a little stillness? Maybe in this hectic age of multitasking, googling, speed-dating, twittering, commuting, texting and driving-through everything, we could all use a little more stillness. And maybe stillness is the beauty of literature. A good book requires the whole of us. A good book doesn't allow us to engage half-heartedly. A good book needs us to be still.
Well done, Mr. Martel.

Beginnings...
Well, here it is - the inaugural post for my new blog. I've been meaning to do this for a while to help organize and track our bookclub's reading list, and to share some of our thoughts on the books that we are reading. I'm also hoping that I'll be able to gather reading recommendations from my blog followers - everyone likes to hear about a great book, right?
We have five members in our bookclub - two of us have been in the club since it's beginning in 2001. The three other ladies in our club have been in it for more than 5 years. We enjoy finding new little cafes and restaurants to meet at every six months or so. In the next few months, I'll try to post a list of some of the places in Edmonton that we've enjoyed.

And finally, this is a way for me to explore the world of blogging. You'll have to forgive the simplicity of this site as I learn to navigate and create!
Happy reading.
